New Calendar Year Magic

Posted on January 3, 2022January 4, 2022 by runa

Three Easy Rituals To Incorporate for the Beginning of 2022

We are still within the 12 days of Yule, even if you now find yourself ‘back to business.’

Blessed Calendar New Year, All You Magical Beings! The Winter Solstice is just past and we’re three-quarters through the 12 days of Yule.

If you want to add more Magic to your life in 2022, these three simple spells/rituals may just get your started!

In the spirit of the season, I wanted to share with you some easy Magic you can incorporate as you freshen up your Muggle calendars from 2021 to 2022. These are traditions that have been a part of my life for years and decades and they bring lots of good energy and abundance for me, I’m sure they could do the same for you. It is my privilege to share this magic with you and if you find some use for it or begin to incorporate it in your own traditions, please take a moment and comment below to let me know. Do note that although this says new years, there’s still time, especially with today’s (recent) Capricorn New Moon, to apply any or all of these to your energy and magical practice for January 2022.

Our ‘Good Things’ Jar.

The Good Things Jar/Attitude of Gratitude: I don’t know exactly how long ago we began working this intentional magic of recognizing our embarrassment of abundance and allowing it to energize us to be our truest selves and (thereby) live our best lives. We set the jar up early in our now 16-year marriage (I reckon 2007, but not sure) and put it in a prominent place in our home, one where everyone could access it. Each time we recognized something we were grateful for, you know, the good things in your life, we’d note it on a small piece of paper, fold it, and store it in the jar. Each person was responsible for tending the jar with their gratitude throughout the year. This little ritual of gratitude that happens spontaneously (see photo of examples), typically happened when any of us were alone. I rarely would see The Viking or say, Dragon Son, anyone, honestly, put something in the jar. I often feel like tending Magic is a very personal thing. This ritual that we do seems to follow. But it is “gathered” together to make it stronger. Setting up the jar can be a group activity, or like in my household, the Head Witch In Charge (me!) decorated or created the jar to store the nuggets of thankfulness. It can be as simple or ornate as you like. You don’t need a special jar, ours is just a left-over pickle jar. However, others who I have taught this practice to have made theirs very fancy-like. You do you, Witch. When the kids were younger it was a great New Year’s Day activity that could be done indoors and feed their creativity. During the New Year celebrations – some years we did this New Year’s Eve, some years, New Year’s Day, this year it was NYD –  we gather around the fire, typically with cakes and ale (this year it was sparkling wine and Yule cookies), and read out loud each note of gratitude stored in the jar.

This is just a sampling of what we took note of in 2021…yes, even finding toilet paper.

We take each note as they are read and place them in a paper sack. Reading the notes often spurs on conversation about the event (e.g. We got the vaccine! Appeared three times in the jar this year). The result of this energy is strengthening bonds within the household/family. After the reading of these strips of written blessings, they are burned in the fire. We hold and pause for an organic amount of silent time imagining the smoke as the energy of our annual recognition & focus on gratitude is set off into the universe to spread that positivity.

My Viking takes the small package of gratitude slips to the fire.

We may pray silently, individually for how we want things to improve and grow for the coming year, or just hold space to welcome any and all abundance. We hold one another and thank one another for all we do for one another throughout the year, describing often, in detail, what we appreciate about one another. Then it’s time for eating and drinking and talking about our hopes for happy memories (this year’s conversation was all about creating more gatherings for family and friends here at Villa Westwyk). In short this is about acknowledging the good of the previous year and carrying those good feelings from one calendar year to the next. Each year I have done this gratitude work has helped me get deeper and deeper into the life I’d prefer with the people I love. I am hard pressed to see us stop this well-loved ritual and magical work.

More on this year’s Good Things Jar in a future post. Farewell 2021.

Hoppin’ John and Johnny Cake: Food is definitely a focus of my life. I love creating meals for family and friends. Kitchen Witchery is where I could practice a magical life hidden from the well-meaning view of Muggle and Christian friends and family. I’m way more open about my lifestyle and beliefs now, although there are only a select few who know all about the Magical AND Muggle me. This is a decision in my practice that was long passed down, you know, the whole I am the daughter of the Witch you didn’t burn. Will ever shall the two meet? I have no idea. But for now, Kitchen Witchery is so pronounced in my everyday life, literally, I have meal times each day to create magic through Kitchen Witchcraft.

Hoppin John is part of our New Years Tradtition.

On New Year’s Day, without fail, you will find me blessing those in my household with foods that bring abundance. Eating this on New Years is a ritual to bring a prosperous and healthy new year. Yule Ham is stretched to make the Hoppin’ John broth and meat the stew. Greens from the garden – we had kale this year – reminds us that the Earth still gives us fresh foods that are so nutritional. Stores from the larder are also used (canned carrots, if there are none in the garden), and of course the dried peas. Although this is traditional for many folx in the Southern United States, born out of the African diaspora, you will find pockets of families in the Midwest (especially Detroit & Chicago) and throughout the Rockies that cook a version of this meal for New Year’s. I continued this tradition when we moved to the Pacific Northwest. Here’s the key ingredients: Black-eyed peas: these legumes symbolize the coins we have in our piggy banks. If you host a Hoppin’ John meal on New Year’s Day, the host leaves a lucky coin under their guests soup bowls. These coins have been blessed and should be carried by the receiver throughout the year to increase their abundance. Leafy Greens (collards, mustard, turnip, kale, chard, etc.): These are the color of money (at least here in the United States). As I mentioned above, for a good portion of North America, you can still be growing these veggies in your kitchen gardens or in mini hoop houses and such. These greens are not only good for you, but keep you healthy so you have more earning potential. Visualize money coming to you. Ham Hocks: As winter approached, smoked meats were a pantry staple for many. Throughout the winter months, bacon, beans and rice are often served throughout the southeastern United States. Hoppin’ John is a celebratory version of this. Note: you can make this vegetarian, or even vegan, but unfortunately, I don’t have a tried-and-true recipe for such. Perhaps I’ll explore that this year. Tell me if you want me to figure one out. Rice: If you have rice, you have a meal, is a school of thought for many cultures. So to eat rice on New Year’s was done to insure your cupboards were full throughout the year. Onions & Garlic: Again, we’ve hit the time of year when long-storing foods would be more plentiful than fresh. Onions & Garlic in Kitchen Witchery are long thought to help repel negativity. Nutritionally they are great antioxidants, decrease inflammation and boost immunity. All good things during winter.

Johnny Cake – corn bread – helps focus goals towards wealth.

Johnny Cake (aka Cornbread): It’s the color and shape of gold coins. Again, eating abundance to attract abundance. Besides tasting delicious and pairing nicely with Hoppin’ John, Johnny Cake is a great way to get phosphorus for bone health. Other ingredients within the cake/bread are also natural antioxidants as well as boosting sodium in the body, which in winter can be an issue. Eating this to start off the new year is all about not only setting abundance intentions for the new year, but also about stretching the abundance to share with others. If you have enough , and I’ve always known the pot of Hoppin’ John to feed us for a few meals, and you eat it the next day (Jan. 2), it’s called Skipping Jenny and is said to reinforce the magic of eating it on New Year’s Day. Whether you feed a whole tribe or just your love and you, focusing intent into something going inside of you is powerful Magic. Adding the extra fun of the lucky coin (one year I charged the coins under the Solstice Full Moon in the mint bed) for Hoppin John Diners to carry for luck through the year just amps up the ritual. To your health and abundance, include this practice in your New Years! Break that corn bread together in love!

Reinforcing the Magic of Kitchen Witchery with Skipping Jenny.

Fire scrying: Every new year, just sitting by the fire with a warm beverage and just meditating, if not getting into full-on trance mode and divining through fire scrying is a traditional part of my magical work and targeted reset for the calendar year. As a Witch, I often do “new year’s” work on Samhain. So the calendar year offers a great check-in time on how I’m progressing on my goals and to redress any tangents that are not serving me. Don’t have a way to sit by a fire? A candle dedicated just for your New Year’s magic works, too. This year we upped our connection to the fire, and did a short yoga practice next to the fire place. If you live where it’s warm and have fire-ring access, this could be such a beautiful ritual. Connecting with your breath before you gaze into the flames is such a great grounding action before letting your higher self take over. Some years, when my psychic energy was lower on the calendar new year, I just did a visualization exercise instead of scrying. I would stare into the fire and see myself accomplishing what I want to do for the coming year. This is a great way to hone your intentions for the new year – being lost and not knowing what direction to go in, often blocks our path. You are not alone, and I offer these alternatives for those times. It happens to every Witch at one point in time in their lives. Sharing my rituals and experience is again why I’m doing this blog.

Warming Our Magical Lives with Fire Scrying.

Bonus- Journal Practice: Each new year I give myself a new journal and again, dedicate time to write down all I’m experiencing in my life and organize my thoughts, feelings, ideas, goals, etc. This year, my journaling practice is going to include more focus on my magical practice, specifically Runes, their meanings and using that medium even more definitely in my life. Your mileage may vary. You may want to focus on something else within your journaling. For years, I’ve added to our family’s collective Good Things practice by starting each day in my journal noting three things I’m grateful for. I’ve also kept track of things like sleep data, other personal health issues (e.g. I didn’t get help for my migraines until I kept detailed records of them and had ‘data’ to show my medical teams and holistic healers), to simply new music I like. It’s amazing how much comes into clear understanding just by writing things down. Synchronicity breeds off of energy put in black and white. Trust.

I tend for more functional and high-quality journals for my practice; you can get as plain or fancy as you like. You do you, Witch.

I hope these little New Year’s rituals are things you can easily use to be the Magic of the World, to be your truest self and live your best life.

Editor’s Note: This post and many more to come will be labeled under what I’ve discovered is my personal type of eclectic intuitive witchcraft: MidGardening Witchery. Yes, that’s a riff on Midgard, the Norse Mythos realm that is Earth. This particular leaning of paganism is where I find myself called as far as working with deities, magical tools (Runes). Combine this with Gardening as a nod to my Permie Witch* efforts as an Earth Healer, and of course all that I find myself doing in Witchery as a Crone Hedge Witch. All this cooks in the cauldron and becomes the spiritual stew that is MidGardening Witchery, my personal craft practice. It’s founded in being the Hedge Witch I am, but combines all the passions in my life as well. My introversion has allowed me to pursue living a life that is more suited for me to be my true self and living my best life. Working with the Earth, divine, magic, food, dream interpretation, rune casting, and of course writing, have all brought me here.

*Permie Witch is a term I’ve been using to mean a magical viewpoint on the Permaculture Principles and applying them as a path towards my desire to directly care for and live with the earth and its creatures. Look for future blog posts detailing this deeper.

Reflecting Back On 2021

Yes The Witch Is Still Here

Our test market garden in June 2021

Thank you for still being here. After my last blog post in July (yikes!), permaculture work was demanding and unending. Things have finally slowed down where I can focus some energy back here on my site. And for the most part, I’ll be developing this space more and more through the end of this year and into 2022. When I first started this website/blog it was so I could share my knowledge of the craft and provide a space to share my services & magical items. Sharing that knowledge has been a slow expansion, but it feels strong and sure. Thank you for sharing this journey with me. Take a look at all the photos on this post and you’ll see the entire cycle I’ve been living through. So much growth and so much abundance. I’m grateful, but I’m also a bit tired. Not going to lie, this #PermieWitch life squaring with #WritingWitch life trine #RuneCaster & #DreamInterpreter conjunct #KitchenWitchery is non-stop, exciting, rewarding, but a bit fatiguing way to live life. Not sure I’d have it any other way. Chalk it up to my Cancer Moon, Leo Rising, and Scorpio Sun.

Our test market garden in July 2021

So now we’ve tilled, planted, tended, and harvested our way through Summer, and now we’re welcoming Scorpio Season and Samhain Season. My favorite time of year. It doesn’t hurt that this is my Heritage Day time and Birthday Month. I’m dealing with my double pentagram birthday and currently transiting my 3rd house with Neptune and Uranus trining their natal positions in my chart. ;There’s lots of transformation going on, in other words. But I’m going to lean into these changes and not shy away from it. I know this work will benefit my health, business, and relationships. I’m here for it. Hopefully my sharing of this journey will help someone else down the road as well. I’m planning a trip to reset with nature for my birthday weekend. We’ll take our modern Vardo “Siggi” and park next to the ocean. There will be hours of reading, and lounging, beachcombing, familiar snuggling, until our toes curl in delight. After the challenges we’ve encountered this autumn, it’s a much needed break. Nothing fancy, but perfect all the same. Do you plan an adventure for your solar return? I may also mark this occasion with a tattoo. We’ll see. Given COVID-19 and the fact that I’m in a new community and know ZERO tattoo artists, that may have to wait. After that I’ll be celebrating Astrologic Samhain with a deep ancestor ritual. This actually falls on my Heritage Day, so the energy seems ripe for significant progress to be made in my generational healing. Are you celebrating on calendar Samhain, or later, like me? Tell me how you’re celebrating.

Our test market garden in August 2021.

Every Witch will tell you that the veil is thinning. It’s the time of year that the energy is so strong to connect with those who have gone before us. I’ve been getting messages strongly, especially in dreams. And some of the dreams have given me some perspective on what would be better use of this little cottage on the internet, as I like to call my website. Other dreams have been so potent and unusual I had to share them on my weekly Instagram Live “Solitary Shenanigans.” A reminder that messages don’t always mean we can help. Much like not every spell is going to work out exactly as you intend. Regardless, this is a public record that the universe has spoken, and I’m trying my best to listen as I walk the path to vibrate my highest. Sharing like I do on Solitary Shenanigans has helped to build friendships and relationships and I am so excited to give that space more energy, too. The positive response plus the messages from the Dream Maker frame this a no-brainer for energy consumption going into 2022. So see you Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. (Pacific Time) on IG Live?

Our test market garden in September 2021.

Continuing to visit me here, you’ll be getting more about dream work; more about being a caregiver of the land and how it aligns with witchcraft, and you’ll be getting regular kitchen witchery as well. If there’s a particular subject you want to know about, please let me know in the comments. I am investigating platforms that will allow me to teach dream work deeper, more practical kitchen witchery, and invite those interested in communing with nature right here to Villa Westwyk. More on that hopefully by Spring 2022.

Our test market garden in October 2021

The past year has been full of so much. My new website here; continued efforts on my business as a dream interpreter, rune caster, and magical goods provider; and tending to the land of Villa Westwyk. In addition to that I’ve found a new community of wonderful people who vibe higher and stronger, which has blessed my life in so many ways.

There are plans a plenty for 2022 to include an expansion of things that were tried out this past year, so hopefully you’ll stick around to find out about that.

In the interim, I’m wishing you all a Happy Witch’s New Year. Deep Samhain Blessings to you.

Eva, Indy, and Willie started small, as does every seed you plant. But look at them now!

Book Review: Air Magic by Astrea Taylor

Posted on July 22, 2021July 25, 2021 by runa
Air Magic by Astrea Taylor, part of the Elements of Witchcraft series. Released, April 2021 by Llewellyn Books.

I was instantly drawn to this book, Air Magic by Astrea Taylor, when I learned about it, because Air Magic is something so unusual to me. In my own craft practice I work Earth, Water, and Fire Magic often. But beyond incense and feathers, Air Magic was an enigma. This book clarified so much.

So when I saw that Taylor had authored the book, I was happy to dive right in, getting a special autographed release of it as well. I had already read her previous work, “Intuitive Witchcraft” which was such a great guide to what many of us in the Craft are truly practicing and a book I regularly recommend to my fellow pagans. Air Magic arrived with a sweet note, book mark and Air Magic stickers. It was an added bonus that really helped put me in the mood to learn all about Air Magic. And learn I did. Like did you realize that birthday candles on a cake are Air Magic. Of course, duh! But I never thought of it in regards to Air Magic. Fire, Earth, yes. But, it is also Air, as detailed in this book. And when you think about, it, yes. That fire cannot mold the ingredients into cake or light the candles without its fuel: Air. Make a wish, Witch.

Special bonus reminders of Air Magic accompanied the special autographed edition of this book during its inaugural release.

Air Magic is the second book in a series of the Elements of Witchcraft. It not only digs deep all that encompasses Air Magic, but even gives you meditations, rituals, and spells to begin your understanding of Air Magic and incorporating it into your personal practice. It also featured one of my other favorite Witches, Laura Tempest Zakroff. Taylor takes us through not only the history and mythos of Air Magic but also where Air Magic is aligned with animals, crystals, deities, and more. I was thrilled to learn that one of the trees on my property is aligned with Air Magic specifically with the Norse traditions. It will now become the place of my Freyja altar.

But the practical parts of how the reader can use Air Magic in their own practice is the most dynamic part of the book, so earns a top shelf placement in my bookshelf. I appreciate that some of the practical information, the how-to if you will, leans on the simple. Simple, everyday Magic is something that even novice Witches can begin to put into their lives. But there is more in depth rituals as well for those who feel best doing something more formal and detailed. I especially like the Air Magic for travel. And as I deepen my connection to Air Magic, I’ll be using the meditation she outlined in order to get in touch with the element of air.

Before reading this book, Air Magic felt so foreign. Taylor’s Air Magic lifts away the caul of Air Magic and spotlights its interwovenness in our every day lives and easy ways to incorporate it. Packed with deep references, you could easily grab tome after tome from the book’s bibliography and go down an Air Magic rabbit hole if you like. This Scorpio appreciates anything well researched. This book also revealed places where the Air element was way more active in my own practice. Praying Mantis familiar, anyone?

This book is a great blessing to learn about Air Magic.

Lastly, the fact that the word Magic is used in its typical sense – minus the K – in this book also spoke to me. If you’ve been here a bit, you know my feelings on Magic with a K.

Even as a Crone, practicing the Craft is all about learning. Books are the best way to get there, in my opinion. Air Magic is certainly a cornerstone to unravel the mysteries of Air Magic and presented in a clear, practical, and engaging way. If you find yourself drawn to Air Magic you need to add this book to your Witch Library. I’m glad I did.

Anniversary Giveaway!

Posted on July 2, 2021July 22, 2021 by runa
To say thanks for all the support over the past year, we’re giving away three big prizes. See below for details.

Wow, what a year it’s been. So many changes for so many of us. Certainly true for this Crone Witch. Biggest of all was my entry into public Witch life and opening up my RT Magical Services & Goods shop, that allowed me to combine those critical Cs I crave in my life: Creator, Curator, and Connector. And for a whole year I’ve been working at it, being a shoot-from-the-hip entrepreneur (and learning to spell entrepreneur…LOL).

As I type this, another dream interpretation order came in. Woohoo! Keeping busy means I’m doing my part for my family and home, which makes my Cancer Moon sing. Being a Boss Witch makes my Leo Rising satisfied and keeps its “good ideas” down to a sustainable amount, so my Scorpio Sun can keep doing the shadow work I have put off until my Crone Crowning.

I love doing this work. It combines all my great loves. Something I’ve been working towards for a very long time in my life. And I’m so grateful. I love having my work’s focus all about Magic, whether it’s my Magical Services & Goods or working our Permaculture efforts here at Villa Westwyk, or Writing my secret project, I’m feeling so blessed. So it’s time to give back. Welcome to the First Anniversary Giveaway.

The First Anniversary Giveaway will offer many chances to enter as detailed below. Grand prize is a “year ahead” Full Elder Futhark Rune Casting, a divination reading that looks at your year ahead. This is a $55 value currently. Second prize is a 3-Rune Reading. This is a divination about one question you’re having. Currently a $20 value. 3rd prize is a Dream Interpretation. Currently a $15.55 value. Be advised that all of these items are currently on sale for the anniversary offerings. Prices will rise to regular prices post anniversary sale (July 22).

Here’s the Anniversary Giveaway rules:

  1. Follow me on Instagram and get one entry. If you are already a follower, comment by tagging someone with whom you’d love to introduce me.
  2. Tag one person you think might enjoy one of these prizes while sharing the original post on your Instagram Story and get one entry.
  3. Comment with one thing you know about me and my work here or on the Giveaway Announcement Instagram Post (July 2) of the same get one entry (two entries if you answer both here on the website or the Giveaway Announcement post on Instagram, July 2).
  4. Bonus Three Entries: Leave a comment here to tell me how you came to my little cottage on the internet.
  5. The Winner(s) will be announced live on my IG Live, Wednesday, July 14, 10:30 a.m. so don’t delay in getting your entries in.
  6. Three prizes will be given. Only one person per prize.
  7. All prizes are digital so the Giveaway is open to all!

Again, the Giveaway runs until July 14. How many entries have you gotten in so far?

Thank you again for supporting my work as a Witch, as a Writer, as a Healer of the Earth. When you support me, you support your own Magical life. What a beautiful partnership that is, yes? Here’s to many more anniversaries!

Blessed Be,

Book Review: The Witches Almanac – An Anthology of Half a Century of Collected Magical Lore

Posted on June 29, 2021June 28, 2021 by runa
A curious addition to any Witch Library.

The 50 Year Anniversary Edition of The Witches Almanac – An Anthology of Half of Century of Collected Magical Lore by Andrew Theitic and published in July 2020 by Wtiches’ Almanac, Ltd. is a collection of a “best of” from the editions of this almanac since 1971. There is articles on everything from making charms, fire gazing, the evil eye, the legend of so many of the stories that include witches, crystals, herbalism, deities, honestly, you named it. It even includes some old advertisements aimed at the pagan community.

I would not classify this as a reference book, but there are some very interesting reference materials within it, making it a read that will likely allow any Witch of any level to learn something.

I think this is a book I might keep at the tub side, the coffee table, or near anywhere you might need to just sit and just read whenever. It’s not a book to read cover to cover, although I did to produce this review. Whatever type of Witch or pantheon you follow, you’ll likely learn something reading it. There are also interviews and articles about the folks that have been behind the Almanac for so long, some of them in memoriam. It also might be an interesting book for which to do some bibliomancy/stichomancy divination.

The book includes some interesting illustrations, especially where some of the vintage advertisements are concerned, creating another point of interest as you peruse the book.

One of the vintage ads found in this 50th Anniversary Witches’ Almanac.

It doesn’t just include things from the past, there are many issues covered in the book that are in the conscious collective now like Climate Change and Transgender Rights.

If you are interested in the stories, beliefs, and practices that have been written about for the last 50 years. Everything from the Eye of Horus, the Queen of Shades, or all about The Old Apple Tree, you will find interest in this book. It’s definitely a curiosity as opposed to a well-indexed reference guide. But, I’m sure each and every Witch out there will find something new to learn in that.

Happy 1st Birthday to My Boss Witch Life

Posted on June 25, 2021July 2, 2021 by runa
Happy Birthday & Farewell Magical Flea Market. Hello Runa Troy Magical Services & Goods.

This month marks one year that I hung my Boss Witch shingle out. I have had such a journey this last year, growing my little cottage business on the heels of a complete script-flip of my life. It’s been such an honor to do Rune Castings and Dream Interpretations, and provide mystical goods for so many incredible people.

For its first birthday, I’m doing a little renovation of the shop. I’ve painted over the Magical Flea Market sign and will simply be known as: Runa Troy: Magical Services & Goods. This is how most in our “BWitch” community know me, so makes much more sense. I will still be providing all the services I have been. Plus if plans go as designed, there will be new services forthcoming.

As an Intuitive Witch with Norse Pantheon Leanings, I’ve given a special name to my personal Craft.

This past year has been deep foundational work to grow the available inventory of mystical items at my disposal, so there will be new Witchy Goods coming soon to my shop. My herb garden’s harvests and other items I deem MIDGARDening Witchery is ready to be sent out into the world. So stay tuned, please.

Lastly, anything with the Magical Flea Market label soon will be listed in the shop soon at a deep discount. My rebranding is your gain. Be sure to favorite my Etsy shop so you’re notified when everything goes live. As well, I’m in the beginning stages of an anniversary giveaway, so keep your eyes peeled here and on Instagram for that announcement.

Thank you again for the support you give for a magical life, both mine and yours. May the next year bring us even more blessings. So it is.

Blessed Be,

Runa Troy, Creator, Curator, and Connector

Pick-A-Rune 6-23-2021

Posted on June 23, 2021June 24, 2021 by runa
Pick-A-Rune! Smoky Quartz, Chrysoprase, or Kyanite.

Thank you all for sticking with me through a week that’s been a bit rough on so many of us. I am trying hard to keep up and do what I can to make this world better. And right not that includes taking deeper care of myself than what I’ve been doing for too many years. And I’m doing that, which means things here have been falling behind. I know full well as a Crone that you need to take care of your own oxygen mask before you put it on others. But, at the same time, you need to figure out if you can land safely. I love having this work. I am really enjoying doing these Special Summer Solstice Readings, and the Dream Interpretations you all are keeping me busy with each and every day. I am so blessed. I am so embracing this path, which is centered on a growing/healing purpose and expanding community. But I’m so grateful that I can work at a pace that is sustainable, and still take care of myself. Hopefully you can see the picture I’m perhaps poorly painting for you (hey, I’m folks-artsy af some days). Regardless, please know I’m doing that shadow work. This level of shadow work seems to be some very traumatic, mind-changing, deep, deep shadow work. Whee. Thanks Universe. This means I have a dragon load of appointments to take care of myself and my immediate environment, which feed into each other. So sporadic output from this Crone Witch. However, until I can come back to blogging and Instagram Lives, or putting in new items in the Etsy shop, I am happy to offer this Pick-A-Rune. So which do you choose?

Look at the photo, which position, or which stone calls out to you? Feel free to use all three, I feel like some of you need ALL of this advice, and yes, I know this very well may be for me, too.
Smoky Quartz is Naudhiz (Need); Chrysoprase is Fehu (Wealth); Kyanite is Dagaz (Dawn).
Smoky Quartz can help you with those hip ailments; Chrysoprase is a friend to help with self esteem; and Kyanite for Crown Chakra Work.

Smoky Quartz & Naudhiz:

Naudhiz is in Heimdall’s Aett, the Warrior’s Aett, the Aett that deals with Victory, Power, and Success.

Oh, baby, the needs you need. Are you feeling it? Are you longing? Are you just wanting deliverance from this distress? But you have the power to get exactly what you want, but you just may need to decide how you’re going to do it first, because, hey, you lucky Bwitch, you got options! Lots of options. That’s what happens when you are powerful and people look to you as a leader. Boss Baby. Which one do you want? The easy one that might piss someone else off? The balanced that’s super hard? Or maybe the hard one that makes it easy in the long run? This Rune. This Rune is putting out so much “take care of your shit” energy that I feel like I need to call for suppressive fire. Regardless of your choice, you will survive. Realize that you may have to pause before moving forward – whatever your choice – and discern want vs. need. Is it really a need? Oh, and look for that aftershock for what you think you need? If you get it, will it hurt someone around you? Recheck and then check again. Okay, now you can move forward.

Chrysoprase & Fehu:

Fehu is in Freyja’s Aett, the Growth Aett. It is all about love, happiness, and pleasure. All the Good Things Aett.

There is a new beginning for you approaching. Get ready to receive. Yep, you have to be ready to be swimming in everything you want and need. Abundance that just fuels your gratitude and your give-back. Oh, but things are shit right now, you say? You are a strong one. The Runes know it. The Energies know it. Source and Spirit know it. Freyja knows it. But do you know it? You have all the capability, resources, and support you need to move forward. If they aren’t there, how can you open the trap door to have it flood down upon you? I see some of you need to physically change your life: move houses, your body, your job. And since Fehu meant the wealth that cattle brought to the historical people, our ancestors, that birthed this language and message-giving alphabet, the Elder Futhark, the horns of these bovine beasts appear before me. This is a stern All-Father warning to make sure that you are protected when you receive this windfall. Don’t brag. Be humble. Be kind. Oh, and don’t fall back into negative patterns from which you’ve already broken free. Keep. Moving. Forward. There is delicious living in your future. Don’t. Fall. Down. You got this, Bwitch.

Kyanite & Dagaz:

Dagaz is in Tyr’s Aett, The Justice Aett; It is all about fairness, balance, and doing the right thing.

Are you feeling like you just woke up to your life and you’re completely baffled? Yeah, it happens. You’re taking all these baby steps to live your truest self and best life, and BAM! things are so much different and you’re blinking at it like a robot on the fritz. Did you forget to be careful what you asked for? Or did you just not believe you could manifest this goodness? Stop with that baneful magic of self-doubt and embrace your power. Look at each day as the gift it is and tackle every blessing and lesson. Because the Bwitch you were yesterday is not the one you will be tomorrow. And that tomorrow being? They are badass. You know that next level is a breakthrough one for you? You’re not confident you can do it? Too bad, you can. You will. There is an utter certainty to this growth. You just need to decide if you’re going to uncover this better self. Whether your path forward is easy, medium, or hard, is really up to you. Work is involved, regardless. Dagaz wants you to work smarter not harder. And that means you may have to call in the coven and have a little work party. You know you got those Bwitches backs as well if they need your support.

Thank you!

I hope these readings resonated with you. These are intended to find you when you need them, not just on the day they are revealed. Again, if they all spoke to you, they all spoke to you. But I bet one of them touched a cord stronger than the others.

Healing is hard. Being human is hard. Working is hard. But you have the power to flourish. Open your soul to more and it will arrive. Fear is just another barrier to our truest selves and best life. Hop that hurdle and fly, Bwitch.

I wish you freedom and peace,

Blessed Be,

Runa Troy

Touching Lives One Animal At A Time

Saweetie.

The call of nature to those who follow the path of The Craft is strong. You may find yourself surrounded by orphaned animals, or unusual sightings of uncommon creatures. Your home may host plants that can survive no where else. It’s because these children of Gaia know that you are a healer. Witches heal the earth and the earth heals us. But sometimes we need a little help.

Recently we had this 16-year-old Australian Shepherd wander onto our property. Now, we live in a very rural area. Farmhouse after farmhouse. Farm dogs wander, but they always go home. So when they wander onto our property, we normally greet them without objection. However, it doesn’t take long for our own two dogs to exclaim annoyance with the interloper and loudly. To keep the peace, we calmly tell our farm dog visitors to go home. And they depart with no fuss.

Saweetie, as we would come to call her, kept coming back. Repeatedly. Our two dogs, Granny Shadow and Ms. SnickleFritz, were not happy with the visitor, who was calm and clearly unbothered by our smaller dogs. When she came back the third time, I noticed she was walking kind of crooked. She wasn’t aggressive or even crying. Just not looking like a dog should, even a senior one.

My Viking, aka The Dog Whisperer. He’s not pleased with the state of this dog’s health.

When she came back the third time, I called the Viking from his shop and asked for assistance. Anyone who knows my spouse knows he’s a big animal lover and very much a dog whisperer. He has mused often that he would be happy to be reincarnated as one of our dogs. What a great life they lead! Without hesitation he leaped Into action regarding Saweetie. She easily came to him and we leashed her and tried to assess if there was a collar or tags or what not. She was not in good shape. Her hair was matted badly. She was in need of a bath. Her nails hadn’t been taken care of in a long time. When we tried to give her water, we began to suspect that she couldn’t hear or see very well. And then there was the matter of looking like she might be injured because of the crooked way she was walking, which was very slowly, and her constant panting, which can indicate stress in a dog.

The only tag she had was a rabies vaccination tag. So The Viking called our local Humane Society. It was the weekend and we were thinking it might be not until Monday until our message was answered. We began to create plans to house Saweetie until we could get her help. Before we could even set up a dog house, the Whatcom County Humane Society called us back. They had received another call reporting Saweetie missing. Not too far from our home as well. She was a farm dog, like we suspected. They offered for us to take the animal back to the owners, or have the owners come to us, or they would dispatch an officer who would come out and retrieve the dog and take the animal back to its human.

We chose the third option because we felt that once the animal control officer saw the animal, some counseling to its owner would be more well received from them rather than The Viking and Some Crone Witch lecturing said alleged neglectful owners. We also had no idea if the people who have had this animal for 16+ years were some how unable to care for her appropriately. Whatever the case, if more was needed for Saweetie or her humans, the Humane Society said they would help. That sounded good to us. Within the next hour, the animal officer arrived at Villa Westwyk.

The officer arrived quickly and observed all the factors about Saweetie’s situation that we did. Such a good dog in not a great state. Next up was to return her to her licensed owners and provide some feedback to help Saweetie live out her life in a bit more comfort. This isn’t the first time we have rescued an animal and how the officer handled Saweetie showed what a good natured animal she really was. She even got to ride up in the cab with the officer because she wasn’t taking her far (less than a mile) and the dog was too injured to get into the kennels in the back. Saweetie went home and was reunited with a grateful family, which learned some valuable lessons about the needs of their lovely pet.

Saweetie got to ride in the cab because she was so old, feeble, and just an true testament to the name we gave her.

I share this story with all of you so that if you are in a situation where you want to help animals but can’t be a full-time care giver to one, then supporting an agency like your local humane society — and wow! is ours a great one — is definitely a path to helping animals on the daily. Along with our local Habitat for Humanity’s program of Homes for Hives, we will be supporting this local agency in as many ways as we can. Not just because of the good work they did this weekend at Villa Westwyk, but all over counties everywhere.

If you’ve had an interesting animal encounter lately, let me know in the comments. How did it align with your path of The Craft?
